The band Mustn’ts (from Concord, California) released a self-titled EP on January 8, 2018. It is their first release since their name change from Kilroy.
Overall: ★★★☆☆
Tracks
- Imperfect
- There, I Said It. I’m Sorry.
- Hero
- Hate Me
Production 7/10
This EP has two re-recorded songs from their earlier album “Nothing Lasts” under their previous band name. When listening to the songs back to back it is easy to observe how the band has progressed in terms of production as well as the voice of the singer. The sound is much crisper and smoother for the listener. There is no extra frills with the production, which allows for the striking lyrics and instrumentation to shine through.
Lyrics 8/10
Mustn’ts’ strength relies very highly on their beautiful lyricism. “Hero” is undoubtedly the highlight of this category for this album, but there is no shortage in any of the songs.
Variety 7/10
Each song on the EP can be transferred to a variety of situations, from fighting someone in the pit to sitting in my room alone and crying (hypothetically of course). However, they are relatively similar in relation to each other. This may be a smart choice because it is only four songs as well as their first release under this name. It can be helpful to have a distinct sound when starting out and I am very excited to see where they will go next.
This EP is a great first release for the band. Where branding is concerned, a name change can be hard, but Mustn’ts is doing well to establish their sound and maintain a growing audience for their music.
Be sure to check out Mustn’ts and show them some love at one of their upcoming shows!
