Lots of new music was released in September. Here’s some of what we’ve been loving!
→ People Floating – Renny Conti
Released on September 7, 2018, Renny Conti’s debut album features poetic lyrics and will transport you to a new memory with each track. Read our full review of People Floating
→ Casey’s Tape / Harmontown Loops – Colleen Green
Colleen Green released her fourth full length album, Casey’s Tape / Harmontown Loops, on September 7, 2018. If you’re a fan of peppy rock, this album is for you. It features newly recorded versions of songs from her 2016 self titled EP and some new ones as well. Tracks on this album mix some heavier guitar and base with lighter sounds that are reminiscent of video game music.
→ Young Minded – Same Girls
Same Girls’ first full length album, Young Minded was released on September 21, 2018. This album includes four previously released singles and five new tracks which range from upbeat rock to more chill jams. Highlights off of this album are “Domino” with its great guitar riffs and “Young Minded” with its harmonies and lyrics. The Oakland based punk band has done great work on this album both lyrically and instrumentally.
→ Nina Cried Power – Hozier
Hozier is back after 4 years with a new EP entitled Nina Cried Power, which was released on September 6, 2018. “Nina Cried Power” is the title track of the EP and it is nothing short of, well, powerful. The vocals and instrumentation work together and build on top of each other to create something that Hozier described as “a thank you note to the spirit of protest” in an interview with Billboard this year. Hozier will also be releasing a full length album in 2019 featuring the four songs on this EP.
→ “Communicationissexy/Idkhow2communicate” – The Aquadolls
The Aquadolls released their latest single, titled “Communicationissexy/Idkhow2communicate”, on September 21, 2018. The instrumentation of this track feels very reminiscent of The Aquadolls’ usual beach pop and rock, but this time paired with more vulnerable lyrics and a stronger bass. Although The Aquadolls have recently gone through a lineup change, the quality of their music remains strong and a great listen.
→ “Venice Bitch” – Lana Del Rey
The second single off of Rey’s upcoming album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, was released on September 18. Clocking in at nine minutes and thirty-six seconds, it is Lana Del Rey’s longest song to date. This gives Rey enough time to cycle through some melodic verses, into a kaleidoscopic bridge, followed by a guitar solo straight out of a 60’s psychedelic rock group. This song is everything you love about the vintage, americana aesthetic of Lana Del Rey elevated to a completely new level we have never seen before. What caused this evolution? Some credit must be given to Bleachers songwriter, Fun. guitarist, and legendary producer Jack Antonoff who has collaborated with Rey to produce her upcoming album. “Venice Bitch” as well as the leading single, “Mariners Apartment Complex” are two of my favorite Lana Del Rey songs to date and I cannot wait to see what Rey and Antonoff have in store for the rest of the album.
→ “Soundproof” – Destroy Boys
On September 27, Destroy Boys released “Soundproof”, the latest single from their upcoming album (which is set for release October 19). Once again, Destroy Boys has created a great rock song with personal lyrics. In an interview with New Noise, Alexia Roditis (lead vocals) described “Soundproof” as “a culmination of my thoughts and doubts about singing”. This single also falls in line with Destroy Boys’ more recent releases, the Crybaby/Vixen EP and “American River”, in the sense that the production shows major growth. Martin Cooke, the producer of “Soundproof”, has worked on other notable albums such as Foster the People’s Sacred Hearts Club, The Wombats’ Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, and The Killers’ Wonderful Wonderful. “Soundproof” keeps the gritty guitar of Destroy Boys’ first album, Sorry, Mom, but refines the sound for the band’s new era.
→ Ever Changing – The Neighborhood
There is no denying that The Neighborhood has range. Their latest EP, Ever Changing, was released on September 21, 2018. Although four out of the five song on this EP feature other artists, each track still carries The Neighborhood’s signature sound that has gotten them lots of love from alternative fans in the past. Tracks on this EP range from the more upbeat, hip-hop “Kill Us All” to a more chill sounding “Beautiful Oblivion”.
